The best wireless security cameras in Australia

Quick answer: For most homes the best wireless security camera is the Reolink Argus 4 Pro: 4K across a 180° view, solar powered, and it records to a memory card with no monthly fee. Price at the retailer named, checked 18 October 2026. Prices change, so the retailer's page is the final word. We can't show Amazon prices here; the Amazon button shows today's price. Paid links: we may earn a commission. The highlighted pick is the one we'd buy for most people.

How we picked: We compared these 8 picks on power, storage, subscription and price, using maker specs, Australian retailer prices and owner reports. We haven't tested them hands-on yet, and maker claims are labelled as theirs. Commission never changes the order. Full method.

A wireless security camera used to mean a battery you charged every few weeks and a monthly fee to see what it recorded. Neither has to be true now. Many cameras charge from a small solar panel, and several record to a memory card or built-in storage with no subscription at all. Prices below are from Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Officeworks and the makers’ own stores on 18 October 2026 (the Tapo C400 and C660 kits and the Reolink Argus 4 Pro on 21 October); for models also on Amazon Australia, check the current price on Amazon. We compared maker specifications, retailer listings and subscription terms; we have not mounted these cameras on our own walls.

What actually matters

Resolution gets the headline, but four other things decide whether a camera is still useful in a year.

Where the video goes. A camera that records to a microSD card, built-in storage or a home base keeps working if you never pay a cent. A camera that records only to the maker’s cloud is a live-view camera until you subscribe. This is the single biggest difference between brands, and the no-subscription guide goes through it model by model.

Power. Battery cameras need charging; solar cameras charge themselves if the panel sees the sun. Makers quote very different sun hours: Tapo says 45 minutes a day keeps the C400 running, eufy says 3 hours for the SoloCam S220, and Ring recommends 2 to 3 hours for its solar panel. The solar and 4G guide covers placement.

Wi-Fi. Many battery cameras only join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. The eufy SoloCam S220 and S340 are 2.4 GHz only; the Tapo C660 and Reolink Argus 4 Pro also work on 5 GHz. Whatever the band, check the signal where the camera will hang, not beside the router.

Detection. Free person detection cuts out alerts for every passing car and swaying tree. Tapo, Reolink and eufy include it with no plan; Ring and Arlo keep their smarter alerts for subscribers.

The picks

The Reolink Argus 4 Pro is the camera we would put on most Australian houses. Two lenses stitch together a 4K picture across 180°, which covers a backyard or a driveway that would otherwise take two cameras. Reolink’s ColorX night vision records in colour without a spotlight, it detects people, vehicles and animals with no plan, and footage goes to a microSD card of up to 512GB or a Reolink Home Hub. It joins 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi 6. Bunnings sells it with a 6W solar panel for $297.49, and Reolink’s own store sells the same bundle on Amazon Australia. The trade-off of a 180° view is that a face at the far edge of the yard is smaller than it would be through a narrower 4K lens.

The Tapo C660 KIT is the pick if you want one camera to follow movement: 4K, 360° pan and tilt with AI tracking, a solar panel in the box and person, pet and vehicle detection with no subscription, for $299 at Bunnings. That is about the same as the Argus 4 Pro bundle, so choose it for the pan and tilt rather than the price. Amazon Australia sells it directly. Add a microSD card.

The Tapo C400 KIT is the cheapest way to get a camera that never needs charging and records with no plan: $99 at Bunnings for a 1080p camera, solar panel and free person alerts. Tapo says its 5,200mAh battery covers up to 180 days without sun. One warning: the plain C400 listing on Amazon is the camera without the panel.

The eufy SoloCam S220 has its panel and 8GB of storage built into the camera, so there is nothing else to buy or wire. It is 2K, 2.4 GHz only and works with Alexa and Google Home, for $208 at Bunnings. The Swann Xtreem4K bundle at Bunnings ($218) includes a solar panel and a 32GB card, and Swann lists no monthly fees.

For a site with no Wi-Fi, the Tapo C615G KIT takes your own 4G SIM and charges from the sun; see the solar and 4G guide for the data costs.

If your home already runs on Google Home, the Google Nest Cam (battery) fits in best. It is $289 at JB Hi-Fi on sale. Without a subscription you get 3 hours of event history; Google Home Premium starts at A$15 a month or A$150 a year for 30 days of history.

The Ring Outdoor Camera Plus 2K Solar Kit is $99 at Bunnings, the cheapest 2K solar kit we found, and it works well with Alexa and Echo Show. But Ring keeps no recordings without a plan: Ring Solo is A$4.95 a month or A$49.95 a year per camera.

Pointing cameras at neighbours and the street

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) says the Privacy Act does not cover a security camera operated by an individual acting in a private capacity, but state or territory laws may apply. It suggests that anyone worried about a neighbour’s camera first talk to the neighbour, then try a community justice or mediation centre. The OAIC also notes that some councils require planning permission for security cameras, and strata by-laws may cover them. In practice: aim cameras at your own yard and doors, and use the privacy zones most apps offer to mask a neighbour’s windows.

Doorbells and locks

A camera on the front door is often better as a video doorbell, which also answers callers; see the video doorbell guide. The smart lock guide and the screen door lock guide cover the door itself.

The one trap

Buying on price without checking where the video goes. A $99 camera that needs a A$49.95-a-year plan to keep recordings costs about $249 over three years, more than the $218 Swann Xtreem4K bundle, which records to a card. Before you buy, find the line in the listing that says where recordings are stored. If the only answer is the maker’s cloud, add the plan to the price.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wireless security camera in Australia?

For most homes, the Reolink Argus 4 Pro: 4K, a 180° view, solar power and local recording with no fee. If you want pan and tilt, the Tapo C660 KIT ($299 at Bunnings) adds 360° coverage in 4K.

Do wireless security cameras need a subscription?

Not all of them. Reolink, Tapo, eufy and Swann cameras record to a memory card or built-in storage for free. Ring keeps no recordings without a plan, and Google Nest keeps 3 hours of event history free.

Are solar security cameras any good in Australian winter?

Yes, if the panel gets direct sun. Makers quote from 45 minutes (Tapo) to 3 hours (eufy S220) of daily sunlight to stay charged, so a north-facing spot with no shade matters more than the season.

Can I point my security camera at the street or my neighbour's house?

The OAIC says the Privacy Act does not cover a camera run by an individual in a private capacity, but state or territory surveillance laws may apply and some councils need planning permission. Point cameras at your own property and use privacy zones.

Where can I buy security cameras in Australia?

Bunnings stocks Tapo, eufy, Reolink, Swann, Ring and Arlo cameras. JB Hi-Fi stocks eufy, Swann and Google Nest, and Amazon Australia lists Reolink, Tapo, eufy and Google.
