The best security cameras with no subscription in Australia

Quick answer: The best security camera without a subscription is the eufy SoloCam S220: 8GB of storage and a solar panel are built into the camera, so it records and sends person alerts for no ongoing cost. Price at the retailer named, checked 18 October 2026. Prices change, so the retailer's page is the final word. We can't show Amazon prices here; the Amazon button shows today's price. Paid links: we may earn a commission. The highlighted pick is the one we'd buy for most people.

How we picked: We compared these 7 picks on storage, subscription, power and price, using maker specs, Australian retailer prices and owner reports. We haven't tested them hands-on yet, and maker claims are labelled as theirs. Commission never changes the order. Full method.

“No subscription” is printed on a lot of camera boxes, and it does not always mean the same thing. On some cameras it means everything works free forever. On others it means you can watch live, but nothing is kept unless you pay. Prices below are from Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi and the makers’ Australian pages on 18 October 2026 (the Tapo, Reolink and eufy S340 prices on 21 October); for models also on Amazon Australia, check the current price on Amazon. We compared maker specifications, retailer listings and subscription terms; we have not tested these cameras hands-on.

Three things a subscription can lock away

When you read a listing, check these three, in this order.

  1. Recording. Does the camera keep video without a plan? This is the one that matters. eufy, Reolink, Tapo and Swann record to a microSD card, built-in storage or a home base. Ring’s FAQ says recorded video needs a Ring plan. Google Nest keeps 3 hours of event history free.
  2. Smart detection. Does it tell a person from a cat or a car for free? Tapo includes person detection with no subscription, Reolink includes person, vehicle and animal detection, and eufy runs human detection on the camera. Ring’s person, package and vehicle alerts are plan features.
  3. Cloud backup. A copy of clips off the property. Useful if the camera itself is stolen, and it is the part almost every brand charges for, with Swann’s free rolling backup the exception among the cameras here.

What the plans cost

These are the prices on each maker’s Australian page on 18 October 2026.

Brand Without paying Cheapest plan What the plan adds
Ring Live view and alerts, no recordings Ring Solo A$4.95 a month or A$49.95 a year, one device Up to 180 days of video, person and package alerts
Ring (whole home) As above Ring Multi A$14.95 a month or A$149.95 a year Same, for every device at one address
Google Nest 3 hours of event history Google Home Premium Standard A$15 a month or A$150 a year 30 days of event history, familiar face alerts
Arlo 30-day Arlo Secure trial Basic, one camera: $9.99 a month or $8.33 a month billed yearly 30-day video history, activity zones
eufy Local recording and AI detection Cloud Basic plan AUD $14.99 a month Rolling 14 days of cloud backup
Tapo Local recording and person detection Shown only in the Tapo app and web portal Cloud storage
Reolink Local recording and smart detection Optional cloud Off-site copies

Over three years, Ring Solo on one camera is about A$150 and Google Home Premium Standard about A$450. That is more than the price of most cameras on this page.

Where the video lives instead

A microSD card in the camera. Cheapest and simplest. The Reolink Argus 4 Pro, Tapo C660 KIT and Tapo C400 KIT all take cards up to 512GB, which you buy separately. Swann puts a 32GB card in the Xtreem4K box.

Storage built into the camera. The eufy SoloCam S220 and S340 have 8GB inside, so there is no card to buy or fail. eufy’s E340 doorbell has 8GB too, which eufy says holds about 90 days of clips at typical use.

A home base indoors. eufy’s HomeBase and Reolink’s Home Hub store footage from several cameras inside the house. The point is theft: if someone pulls a camera off the wall, the footage of them doing it is not in their hand.

The comparison

Camera Price Storage Free detection Power
Tapo C400 KIT $99 (Bunnings), also on Amazon microSD up to 512GB Person Solar kit
eufy SoloCam S220 $208 (Bunnings), also on Amazon 8GB built in Human Built-in solar
Swann Xtreem4K + panel $218 (Bunnings) 32GB card included Heat and motion Solar kit
Reolink Argus 4 Pro + panel $297.49 (Bunnings), also on Amazon microSD up to 512GB, Home Hub Person, vehicle, animal Solar kit
Tapo C660 KIT $299 (Bunnings), also on Amazon microSD up to 512GB Person, pet, vehicle Solar kit
eufy SoloCam S340 $379 (Bunnings), also on Amazon 8GB built in AI detection, tracking Solar kit

The picks

The eufy SoloCam S220 is the purest no-fee camera here. The solar panel, battery and 8GB of storage are all in one small body, human detection runs on the camera, and eufy describes it as a one-time purchase with no monthly fees. It is 2K with a 135° view and works with Alexa and Google Home. The limits: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, and infrared night vision with no spotlight. $208 at Bunnings, $212 at JB Hi-Fi on sale; Amazon’s listing had no main offer on the day we checked.

The Reolink Argus 4 Pro is the step up. Its two lenses give a 4K, 180° picture, ColorX night vision is in colour, and Reolink includes person, vehicle and animal detection with no plan. Footage goes to a microSD card or Reolink’s Home Hub. $297.49 at Bunnings with a 6W solar panel.

The Tapo C660 KIT brings 4K, 360° pan and tilt and AI tracking for $299, and Tapo says its detection is free, with footage stored on a card and no recurring fees. The Tapo C400 KIT does the basics, 1080p and person alerts, for $99.

The Swann Xtreem4K bundle is the one that comes ready to record: a 32GB card is in the box, Swann lists free rolling cloud storage for a day of clips, and there are no monthly fees. Its detection is heat and motion rather than named people or vehicles.

For 360° coverage from one camera, the eufy SoloCam S340 pans and tilts with a 3K zoom lens and 8GB inside, $379 at Bunnings.

At the front door, the Tapo D210 doorbell records to microSD and detects people with no fee, chime included, for $118 at Bunnings. The video doorbell guide has the rest.

When paying is worth it

A plan earns its keep when the camera covers something worth stealing and has no indoor storage, or when you want one app for doorbell, cameras and alarm with long history. If that is you, Ring and Google are the polished options, covered in the main camera guide. For a holiday house with no Wi-Fi, a 4G camera adds a data plan whatever the brand; see the solar and 4G guide.

The one trap

Reading “no monthly fee” as “everything is free”. On the cameras here, recording and basic detection are free, but a stolen camera takes its card with it. If the camera covers the spot a thief would walk past, mount it high, keep a second camera or a home base indoors, or turn on the free or paid cloud copy for that one camera only.

Frequently asked questions

Which security cameras work without a subscription in Australia?

Reolink, Tapo, eufy and Swann cameras all record locally and send person or motion alerts with no plan. Ring keeps no recordings without a plan, Google Nest keeps 3 hours of events, and Arlo puts cloud recordings behind Arlo Secure.

Do security cameras without a subscription still send alerts to my phone?

Yes. Every no-fee camera here sends phone alerts. Tapo, Reolink and eufy also tell people apart from other motion at no cost; Reolink caps rich notifications on its free plan at 25 a day for its doorbell.

Can I view my camera when I'm away from home without paying?

Yes on the no-fee models here. eufy says notifications and playback from anywhere cost nothing extra, and Tapo, Reolink and Swann list no monthly fee for recording and viewing in their apps.

What happens to my footage if someone steals a camera with local storage?

Clips stored on the camera go with it. A home base kept indoors (eufy HomeBase, Reolink Home Hub) keeps a copy inside the house, and Swann adds free rolling cloud backup of recent clips.

How much do security camera subscriptions cost in Australia?

On the makers' Australian pages on 18 October 2026: Ring Solo A$4.95 a month, Google Home Premium A$15 a month, Arlo Secure Basic from $9.99 a month for one camera, and eufy's cloud Basic plan AUD $14.99 a month.
